Cranes have long been an inspiration for Ann Fahl’s work. Because of their strong silhouettes and presence, they are perfect subjects for fiber art. In this original artwork two Sandhill Cranes stand in a marsh going about their daily routine. The birds are fabricated from sumptuous silks and cottons collected over a lifetime. They are set on a dark blue and green fabric which is a perfect complement to the soft neutral tones of the birds. A contrasting narrow inner border of blue and white creates a frame for them. They are heavily machine appliquéd and embroidered with shiny rayon threads to achieve a life-like detail. The quilting accents the details of the crane’s and the background is covered with a circular pattern. The edges are bound with a subtle blue and black plaid, a perfect way to finish this quilt.
