The birds are created from an assortment of white fabrics: chintz, faille, subtle prints, solid color and hand dyed fabrics. Each bird is shaded with a different color to give them individuality. The bird on the left is shaded with gray, the smallest is shaded with turquoise and the bird on the right is shaded with soft pink. The red fan in the background creates a stronger contrast between the light colored birds in the foreground and the yellow background. It made from a combination of red fabrics sewn to look like the folds of a fan. The fish adds visual weight to the composition. It is created with small scallop shapes that are quilted to look like scales. There is an inner border made from a multicolored hand dyed fabric which echos the colors used in the center panel. A wider outer border is made of yellow to create a frame for the quilt.
The shapes are all machine appliquéd in place. The layers are quilted together with simple shapes. The quilting in the top portion is a repeated scallop shape called clamshells, which repeats the shape of the fish scales. The area around the fish is quilted to look like flowing water. The outer edge is trimmed with the same hand dyed fabric used for the inner border.
