Bennett continues his delicate, intricate original woodwork with this Oriented Strand Vessel (OSV), made of wood carving chips generated as random waste in a subtractive sculpture. The chip fibers are oriented to maximize strength and minimize wall thickness (approximately 1/8-inch) by eliminating the weakness of end grain as in solid wood structures. This allows unconventional holloware, previously foreign to wood, to be formed. Coated with an epoxy resin on the inside, the technique yields an extraordinary strength-to-weight ratio, is waterproof and uses precious woods economically.
